What Happens When Contract Disputes Arise?

Free to PLG members, this event will feature a 90 minute workshop with presentations including practical tips on:

  • Consequences of contract breach – covering the potential consequences of breaching various contract provisions (Sally Shorthose, IP Partner at Bird & Bird)
  • Dispute resolution – including what action to take if a third party infringes your IP or accuses you of infringing theirs (Sophie Eyre, Dispute Resolution Partner at Bird & Bird)
  • Arbitration – involving a discussion of how the arbitration process is conducted (Judith Schallnau, Legal Officer at WIPO Arbiration and Mediation Center)

This event is also free for BIA members and each PLG member can bring one guest for free.  Additional guests will incur a £40 charge but this can be deducted from any future PLG membership fees.  Our joint promotion with the BIA means PLG members can also get £40 off the cost of attending the BIA BioScience Forum on Thursday 20th October at the Royal College of Surgeons (www.ukbioscienceforum.org).

SALLY SHORTHOSE, Partner, Bird & Bird

Sally is one of Bird & Bird's leading intellectual property (IP) partners. She provides a full range of intellectual property commercial advice and support to her clients, including licensing, partnering and exploitation agreements, research, development and marketing collaborations. She also frequently advises clients on regulatory and ‘freedom to operate’ matters, and manages significant due diligence matters. As a transactional intellectual property lawyer, she provides advice in relation to the protection and exploitation of a full range of IP rights, both in stand alone transactions and as part of an acquisition, divestment or investment activity.

SOPHIE EYRE, Partner, Bird & Bird

Sophie is a partner in the Dispute Resolution group specialising in complex civil fraud. She has wide-ranging experience of domestic and international commercial litigation and arbitration, in particular aviation disputes, civil fraud and international asset tracing. She acts extensively in the aviation and aerospace industry in a variety of matters. She also heads up the firm's fraud team and has considerable experience in asset preservation together with its necessary ancillary steps, such as overseas disclosure and appropriate conservatory measures.
7pm - 7.30pm JUDITH SCHALLNAU, Legal Officer, IP Disputes Management Section, World Intellectual Property Organization Arbitration and Mediation Centre

Judith joined the World Intellectual Property Organization's Arbitration and Mediation Center in 2008. She administers arbitration and mediation cases under the WIPO Rules, including complex life sciences arbitrations. Further, she develops specific dispute resolution schemes and provides related legal advice. Judith speaks regularly about WIPO arbitration and mediation at international conferences and publishes in this area. Prior to joining WIPO she worked at the German Aerospace Center in the areas of intellectual property, technology transfer and EU law, and in a law firm in the area of telecommunication law. As a German attorney she specialized in IP and holds an LL.M. of the College of Europe, Bruges. Judith is a certified mediator with extensive experience in international arbitration.
