Senior Business Development Manager Opportunity

The Institute of Cancer Research are looking for a Senior Business Development Manager to work in the Business and Innovation Office at the ICR. The Business and Innovation Office provides expertise to the ICR in all aspects of intellectual property management and commercialisation as well as contractual and commercial aspects of interactions between researchers and industry. Significant experience in licensing intellectual property and contract negotiation will be essential. This post will be based in Sutton but with the option of some flexible/remote working. Some travel to visit other ICR sites and attend meetings throughout the UK and internationally will also be required when the current pandemic climate allows.

Reporting to the Head of Business Development and Licensing, the person appointed will manage a team of 2 or 3 Business Development Managers and have responsibility for the commercialisation of a portfolio of projects which will largely (but not exclusively) originate from defined Divisions within ICR. This will include identifying research or other activities within ICR suitable for commercial exploitation, arranging for intellectual property to be protected where necessary and appropriate, identifying potential commercial partners or other routes to market and leading negotiations and closing licence, collaboration or spin-out deals. The appointee will also be required to maintain a broad network of contacts and to represent the ICR at networking events and conferences. To be successful, the appointee will be required to quickly develop a good understanding of the ICR’s research capabilities and commercial opportunities and be able to explain these to potential collaborators or develop them for commercial gain.

Candidates must hold a higher Degree and/or appropriate professional qualification(s) (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. They must have relevant experience within industry or the higher education sector and have a track record of leading and closing deals in the life sciences. A good knowledge of commercial contracts, and outstanding communication, influencing and interpersonal skills will also be required. The starting salary range is expected to be in the region of £66,500 – £70,000 depending on experience and skills. Future progression is based on annual performance review.
